Cleaning

  • Use mild hand soap or denture cleaner and clean with hands or light bristled tooth brush. Be gentle.

First 3 Months

  • Wear retainers full time (24 hours per day)
  • Remove retainers for eating and routine brushing

Months 3 – 6:

  • If compliant during first 3 months with retainer wear, start wearing retainers only during night hours (minimum 8 hours per day)
  • Remove retainers for eating and routine brushing

Beyond 6 Months

  • If compliant during first 6 months with retainer wear, continue wearing retainers during night hours, 4 nights per week
  • If retainers feel tight or uncomfortable then continue wearing retainers every night for an additional 1 – 2 months before reducing to 4 nights per week

Other Important Requirements and Information

  • Immediately call the office if either or both retainers no longer fit, are lost or broken to avoid relapse.
  • Replacement retainers are $300.00 per arch. This fee only applies for 30 days and may be subject to change.
  • Retainers should be stored in appropriate retainer cases to avoid loss or breakage.
  • Avoid leaving retainers in direct sunlight or around pets.
  • Be certain to keep recall visit appointments for retainer evaluation.
  • Retainers may need to be replaced every 3 – 5 years.
